Velo Vintage in Devon Celebrates 10th Event in Sidmouth

On Saturday 5th December, East Devon based Velo Vintage will be holding their 10th event and their very first in the Regency resort of Sidmouth. The riders will be gathering from 11:00 am onwards in Old Fore Street, outside The Loft. No doubt a few cups of coffee will be enjoyed, before they set off on their bicycles for the seafront at about 1:00 o'clock.

Velo Vintage is run by father and son, Alistair & Sebastian Cope from the Axe Valley, who both love riding their penny farthings, indeed they even tour on them. The unusual spectacle has steadily grown over the last few years from events that have been held in Exmouth, Exeter and Barnstaple and it has to be said, that the organisers are very proud of their Devon traditions.

Dressed in traditional and vintage attire, the riders make their way from one venue to the next on their mixture of modern and old bikes, which more often than not include penny farthings and tandems. The ride is not really that long, probably between 5 to 12 miles, depending on the location and usually along the way, the riders will stop for a Devon Cream Tea, naturally with vintage china and somewhere during the day an obligatory glass of Devon cider is enjoyed. Due to the festive time of this ride, they hope to be roasting chestnuts at the end as they listen to one of their favourite jazz bands at the Anchor Inn.

As well as riding their bicycles, there are competitions during the day, all of which are in a light hearted manner, for the best dressed gent and lady, together with the best decorated bicycle and also best beard!

The day is very much about social cycling in a traditional way and many of the cyclists come back time and time again, to join in on what now has quite a following in the county.

Let me know if you have any questions. We've had such fun riding our vintage bikes over the years and this little event that we run seems to work really well.

Cheerio,

Alistair
