My father rode a 'vintage' Raleigh ladies' bike for years and it's now been passed to me! It's not in brilliant condition but still has the lovely Raleigh badge and Raleigh name on the chain guard.
I'd like help in determining its age and attach a couple of photos...
Is there a date on the hub? these usually consist of 3 52 which means March 1952 for example
Here is an example of 76 5 which is May 1976. The dates can be very feint and not stamped very well. They can be in different places on the hub. Had a real good look all round the hub and could find no mark indicating the date of mfr...any more ideas? Does the serial number indicate the year of mfr?
Serial numbers can be used to identify year, but early bikes are hard to date. Google "Headbadge" and you will find a site that can help, though it only goes back to the late 40s and I think your bike is earlier. Also look up Sheldon Brown's site for information.
Quadrant shift indicates an early bike - a picture of the hub would help a lot as well. You say it is an AW which makes it later than the 30s, but if you can post a photo it can help identify the year.
